Feasibility of lung lobectomy through a transdiaphragmatic approach in dogs

Introducción: Diversas patologías pulmonares pueden requerir una lobectomía pulmonar parcial o total como tratamiento. Este estudio comparó dos técnicas para realizar una lobectomía pulmonar caudal: la toracotomía lateral tradicional (LT) y un nuevo abordaje transdiafragmático (TD). Material y métodos: Se realizaron ambos abordajes quirúrgicos en 18 cadáveres caninos. El cirujano responsable y el orden de intervención se asignaron aleatoriamente. Para comparar ambas técnicas se registraron el tiempo quirúrgico, el porcentaje de superficie del lóbulo resecado, la longitud de la incisión y las lesiones iatrogénicas. Resultados: El tiempo quirúrgico medio del abordaje TD (1155 ± 232,8 segundos) fue no inferior al de la toracotomía lateral (1126,8 ± 180,6 segundos; p = 0,6131). El porcentaje medio de superficie del lóbulo caudal resecado mediante el abordaje TD fue del 25,83 ± 8,95 % (rango: 10,55–40,72 %), mientras que mediante LT se resecó el 100 % del lóbulo. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en las lesiones iatrogénicas entre ambas técnicas. Limitaciones: Se trata de un estudio experimental ex vivo de no inferioridad, realizado por tres cirujanos diferentes. No se efectuaron pruebas de estanqueidad tras las lobectomías. Conclusiones: El abordaje transdiafragmático permite realizar lobectomías pulmonares caudales parciales en cadáveres caninos sin incrementar las lesiones iatrogénicas ni prolongar el tiempo quirúrgico respecto a la toracotomía lateral convencional.
Anthropogenic nest material incorporation and associated lethal entanglement in the Little Swift Apus affinis at a park entrance gate in Masai Mara, Kenya

The incorporation of anthropogenic nest materials into avian nests is a growing global threat, yet macro-ecological records remain heavily skewed toward the Western Palearctic. When string-like synthetic debris are woven into nests, they create a persistent physical hazard that can entangle and kill both adults and nestlings. I document the first confirmed case of plastic nest incorporation and associated lethal entanglement for the Little Swift Apus affinis, recorded on 17 August 2025 at Talek Gate, Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Multiple colonial saliva-bound nests structurally incorporated artificial debris, consisting of green, transparent, and white linear plastic filaments, alongside blue and white films. An adult Little Swift carcass was found suspended by its neck from a fine, transparent synthetic filament tightly woven into the entrance rim of a nest cup. This mortality event highlights the risk that uncontained municipal waste streams pose to synanthropic aerial insectivores breeding on human-made structures.
Same-Sex Parenting and Occupational Justice: An Analysis of a Marriage Equality Law

Chile’s Marriage Equality Law (Law No. 21,400) expanded legal recognition for same-sex couples, yet questions remain regarding how diverse forms of parenting are recognized within its framework. This study aims to analyze how same-sex parent families and their parenting occupations are discursively constructed in the law’s legislative history. A qualitative document analysis was conducted using Bacchi’s What’s the Problem Represented to Be? approach in dialogue with Critical Discourse Analysis, examining statutory text, parliamentary debates, and policy documents. While the law broadens access to marriage and specific forms of legally recognized parenting, inclusion is partial. Key areas—such as filiation, adoption, assisted reproduction, and nonmarital families—remain restricted or unaddressed, reproducing forms of occupational injustice. Parenting is shaped by legal and discursive frameworks, and critical policy analysis helps reveal how these frameworks produce occupational injustice across diverse family contexts.
Emerging pharmacological and neuromodulation interventions for suicidal ideation and behaviour

Suicide remains a leading cause of premature mortality worldwide. Current treatments are limited by delayed onset, durability, or poor tolerability. This narrative review, informed by a structured literature search, summarises the last decade of evidence on pharmacological and neuromodulation interventions for suicidal ideation (SI) or suicide attempt (SA) that are not approved for these indications. We searched PubMed for studies enrolling adults with SI or SA, including controlled trials and naturalistic/observational studies. Thirty-four studies were included: 22 pharmacological (13 efficacy, nine effectiveness) and 12 using neuromodulation (nine efficacy, three effectiveness). Across controlled trials, SI commonly improved within days to weeks. Some trials reported SI reduction beyond concurrent depression score changes, suggesting partial independence, but evidence remains inconsistent and method-dependent. Encouraging results were reported for NMDA-related drugs (NRX-101 and high-dose D-cycloserine; amantadine in Borna disease virus-1–positive depression), opioid-system modulation (buprenorphine at ultra-low and high doses in distinct populations), ayahuasca in major and treatment-resistant depression, and adjunctive pimavanserin. Smaller effects were observed for vor- tioxetine augmentation and insomnia-targeted zolpidem. Large observational datasets reported associations between lower suicidality and folic acid, benztropine, testosterone initiation in transgender adults, and non- vitamin K oral anticoagulants versus warfarin, whereas non-medical cannabis use was associated with worse SI trajectories. Neuromodulation evidence implicated accelerated or targeted repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, theta-burst stimulation, and magnetic seizure therapy for SI reduction, with longer-term observa- tional support for vagus nerve stimulation. Future trials should prespecify suicide-related outcomes, test inde- pendence from mood change, and assess durability and high-risk transition periods to advance suicide-specific treatment development.
No refuge from pollution: ingestion of synthetic debris by the endangered 1 Iberian desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) in freshwater ecosystems of Spain

Human activities have introduced a wide range of pollutants into natural environments, altering ecological processes and threatening wildlife. In recent years, plastic pollution has gained increasing attention, as it affects ecosystems worldwide. However, little attention has been paid to its presence in remote freshwater ecosystems, especially concerning endangered species. This study documents the ingestion of anthropogenic debris by the Iberian desman, a semi-aquatic, endangered mammal endemic to the Iberian Peninsula.
Diversity and conservation status of amphibians and reptiles in cities: a country- level approach using citizen science

Urban areas are expected to expand significantly in the coming decades due to increasing human settlement in cities. Although the number of studies on urban biodiversity is growing, amphibian and reptile communities remain poorly investigated in these environments. Here, we use a citizen science approach to study the herpetofauna occurring in 32 Spanish cities, considering both native and alien species.
Beyond the brain: insights from behavior analysis for understanding psychiatric conditions

Despite decades of neuroscientific research, psychiatric conditions continue to resist clear and consistent biological explanation. This article critically examines the dominance of neuro-reductionist models in psychiatry and introduces behavior analysis as a compelling alternative – one that explicitly rejects the notion that psychiatric conditions can be reduced to brain dysfunctions.
Surviving in the city: annual and seasonal survival variation in Mediterranean house sparrows Passer domesticus

Seasonal environmental variation strongly influences bird reproduction, growth, migration and survival. The house sparrow, a characteristic urban species, is declining in parts of its native range, yet information on adult and juvenile survival in Mediterranean countries remains scarce. We examined annual (year-to-year) and seasonal survival patterns (between quarters defined by the biology of the species) in an urban population in eastern Spain. A review of published European annual survival estimates revealed a general decline in both adult and first-year survival over time, with lower values typically reported in local studies than in national assessments, suggesting that reduced survival may contribute to ongoing population declines. Robust, geographically representative survival estimates, together with updated productivity (annual reproductive output) data under current urban conditions, such as reduced food availability, limited nesting sites and high pollution levels, are essential to evaluate population trajectories and assess the long-term viability of the species across its European range.

Continuous and Non-Invasive Lactate Monitoring Techniques in Critical Care Patients

Lactate, once merely regarded as an indicator of tissue hypoxia and muscular fatigue, has now gained prominence as a pivotal biomarker across various medical disciplines. Recent research has unveiled its critical role as a high-value prognostic marker in critical care medicine. The current practice of lactate detection involves periodic blood sampling. This approach is invasive and confined to measurements at six-hour intervals, leading to resource expenditure, time consumption, and patient discomfort. This review addresses non-invasive sensors that enable continuous monitoring of lactate in critical care patients. After the introduction, it discusses the iontophoresis system, followed by a description of the structural materials that are universally employed to create an interface between the integumentary system and the sensor. Subsequently, each method is detailed according to its physical principle, outlining its advantages, limitations, and pertinent aspects. The study concludes with a discussion and conclusions, aiming at the design of an intelligent sensor (Internet of Medical Things or IoMT) to facilitate continuous lactate monitoring and enhance the clinical decision-making support system in critical care medicine.
Problematic Digital Behaviors, Procrastination, and Psychological Well-Being: An Integrative Explanatory Model of Happiness in Young Adults

In recent years, the emergence and development of new technologies have led to an increase in problematic digital behaviors, which have been associated with lower levels of subjective well-being and reduced perceptions of happiness among young people. This cross-sectional study employed a non-experimental, descriptive, and correlational design. The aim is to examine the relationships among problematic digital behaviors, maladaptive coping, and subjective well-being, in order to develop an integrative explanatory model.
A Meta-Analysis Examining the Efficacy and Predictors of Change in Mindfulness- and Self-Compassion-Based Interventions (MBSCIs) in Reducing Psychological Distress Among University Students

University students are vulnerable to psychological distress due to the academic and social demands of this life stage. Mindfulness and self-compassion are effective and adaptable strategies in an academic environment that promote emotional regulation and psychological well-being. This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the combined impact of mindfulness- and self-compassion-based interventions (MBSCIs) on psychological distress. It will also analyze their role as predictors of therapeutic change, as well as the moderating influence of sociodemographic and contextual factors.
Cognitive behavioral therapy effects on global functioning, domain-specific functioning, and quality of life in adult ADHD: A comprehensive meta-analysis

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for adult ADHD provides adaptive coping strategies targeting executive dysfunction and emotion regulation, processes underlying functional impairment. However, most research has prioritized symptom reduction over functional outcomes. This meta-analysis quantified CBT effects on global functioning, quality of life (QoL), and domain-specific functioning (social, occupational, educational), while examining moderators and the role of ADHD symptom change.

Finalmente, analiza su papel en la organización y representación de la profesión psicológica, así como sus insuficiencias, retos y tareas para seguir favoreciendo el posicionamiento y la internacionalización de la ciencia psicológica y de la profesión en los países de lengua española y portuguesa.
Wintering Thrushes as Microplastic Pollution Sentinels in the Ground‑Foraging Guild of Mediterranean Olive Plantations

Plastic pollution is a growing global environmental problem, and evidence shows that many wildlife species ingest plastic. In terrestrial environments, thrushes are indicators of microplastics pollution within their breeding ranges. This study investigated whether the Song Thrush Turdus philomelos and Redwing Turdus iliacus can indicate plastic pollution in terrestrial environments during wintering, by analysing their digestive tracts. These findings confirm thrushes as effective indicators of microplastic pollution, including in wintering areas, and highlight the ubiquity of these particles in terrestrial agroecosystems.
