What is trending in paediatric dentistry? An Altmetric study on paediatric dentistry journals

Abstract

Purpose To assess the online attention to research in the feld of paediatric dentistry in relation to publication details and citations. Methods The articles were identifed by a search performed through the Dimensions Free App. The search included the six journals related to paediatric dentistry listed in the SCImago Journal and Country Rank. The 200 articles with the highest AAS (Altmetric Attention Score) were collected and screened for data related to publication, authorship, and research topic. Citations were harvested from WOS (Web of Science) and Scopus. Results The 86.3% of the 200 articles belonged to only two of the journals: the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry and the European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry. The 53.5% of the articles were published between 2014 and 2019. The mean AAS was 8.3. Cross-sectional studies were the most prevalent study design. AAS did not correlate to the number of citations as reported in WOS and Scopus. Conclusions Online attention to research in paediatric dentistry can be improved. According to the topic, erosion studies displayed high visibility. The classic citation count in combination with the AAS ofers a more comprehensive insight iinto research. The online profle of journals and their social media dissemination policies should be improved to facilitate the spread of research information in scholar and non-scholar audiences through the web.

Objetivos: Evaluar la atención en línea a la investigación en el campo de la odontopediatría en relación con los detalles de publicación y citas. Métodos: Los artículos fueron identificados por una búsqueda realizada a través de la aplicación gratuita Dimensions. La búsqueda incluyó a las seis revistas relacionadas con la odontopediatría indexadas en SCImago Journal and Country Rank. Los 200 artículos con mayor AAS (Altmetric Attention Score) se recopilaron y examinaron en busca de datos relacionados con la publicación, la autoría y el tema de investigación. Las citas se obtuvieron de WOS (Web of Science) y Scopus. Resultados: El 86,3% de los 200 artículos pertenecían a sólo dos de las revistas: International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry y European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry. El 53,5% de los artículos se publicaron entre 2014 y 2019. El AAS medio fue de 8,3. Los estudios transversales fueron el diseño de estudio más prevalente. AAS no se correlacionó con el número de citas según lo informado en WOS y Scopus. Conclusiones La atención online a la investigación en odontopediatría es mejorable. Según el tema, los estudios de erosión muestra alta visibilidad. El recuento de citas clásico en combinación con el AAS ofrece una visión más completa del alcance de las publicaciones científicas. Se debe mejorar el perfil en línea de las revistas y sus políticas de difusión en las redes sociales para facilitar la difusión de información de investigación en ambiente académico y no académico a través de la web.
