Case report: Vertical preparation protocol for veneers

Abstract

The biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) consists of a vertical preparation of the tooth that involves a reduction to zero of the emergence anatomy, the creation of a new finish area, and immediate temporization, so that the gingiva is supported by a suitable prosthetic restoration. This technique not only allows the gingiva around the tooth to stabilise, but over time it will also facilitate the achievement of a predictable coronal migration of the gingival margin. The present paper describes the protocol from dental preparation to the cementation of the BOPT veneers, highlighting the differences with the established protocol for full coverage crowns and the protocol we have followed for many years for veneers with finish lines.

La técnica de preparación biológicamente orientada (BOPT) consiste en la preparación vertical del diente que conlleva una reducción a cero de la anatomía de emergencia del diente junto con la creación de una nueva área de terminación y la provisionalización inmediata, así la encía estará soportada por una reconstrucción protésica adecuada. Con esta técnica se conseguirá, no sólo estabilizar la encía alrededor del diente, sino que, con el tiempo, se podrá conseguir una migración coronal del margen gingival de forma predecible. En este artículo se va a describir cuál sería el protocolo a seguir desde la preparación dental hasta la cementación de las carillas BOPT marcando las diferencias existentes con el protocolo ya establecido para la realización de coronas de recubrimiento total, así como con el protocolo que hemos seguido durante muchos años para las carillas con línea de terminación.
