Máscara y ciudad: Leon Battista Alberti y la condición teatral de la arquitectura

Abstract

El artículo estudia la condición teatral del pensamiento de Leon Battista Alberti. Para ello, se aproxima a los textos del corpus albertiano donde esta condición se manifiesta con mayor claridad, muy especialmente los apartados dedicados al teatro en el tratado De Re Aedificatoria, así como el conjunto de la obra capital Momo o del príncipe. Estos textos, que revelan la condición doble de Alberti, su gusto por la máscara y la simulación, cuestionan el retrato monolítico que algunas lecturas canónicas nos ofrecen del arquitecto renacentista, y nos permiten leer sus edificios como piezas de un proyecto mayor: fragmentos de un modelo de ciudad implícita, que el artículo enuncia, una estrategia de intervención en la ciudad donde lo teatral se convierte en un concepto central.

The article examines the theatrical condition of Leon Battista Alberti's thought. To achieve this, it approaches the texts within the Albertian corpus where this condition is most clearly manifested, particularly the sections dedicated to theater in the treatise De Re Aedificatoria, as well as the entirety of his seminal work Momus. These texts, revealing Alberti's dual condition, characterized by his penchant for masks and simulation, challenge the monolithic portrait presented by certain canonical interpretations of the Renaissance architect. They allow us to interpret his buildings as components of a larger project: fragments of an implicit urban model. The article articulates this model, portraying it as a strategy of intervention within the city where the theatrical emerges as a central concept.
