| spa |
dc.description.abstract | The precision of bracket manufacturing is essential to ensure the correct expression of the information inbuilt into the slot. Background:determine the functional dimensions (slot height, torque and tip) in a sample of conventional MBT prescription metal brackets to compare the actual values obtained with the theoretical values declared by the manufacturers and verify the compliance with the tolerance limits established in the ISO 27020:2019 standard. In addition, the geometry of the slot walls was assessed. Methods: 360 stainless steel preadjusted orthodontic brackets of 12 different manufacturers were assessed. All brackets had a nominal slot size of 0.022 by 0.028 inches, belonged to the right upper central incisor, and were manufactured with the metal injection molding technique (MIM). For each manufacturer, three different manufacturing batches were evaluated. The brackets were coded using a single-blind design. Results: relative to the slot height, all bracket systems in the study group except one displayed a statistically significant difference (pg.05) with the nominal declared value, although only four of the systems did not comply with the tolerance limits established by the ISO 27020:2019. In most of the systems, the slot height was oversized compared to the nominal one. A significant interbatch variability was found in most of the evaluated systems. Only five of the twelve systems displayed mean torque and tip values that matched the declared values (p> 0.05) and the variability between batches in most cases was not significant. For the ISO 27020: 2019 standard, regarding torque, only one of the twelve systems did not respect the standard, while for the tip none exceeded the tolerance limits. Most of the brackets walls were divergent. Conclusions: The dimensional accuracy of commercially available metal brackets is not guaranteed. This inaccuracy has important clinical implications and, in many cases, will force the orthodontist to incorporate bends in the finishing wires, reducing the efficiency and simplicity of the Straight Wire Appliance. Bracket manufacturers should improve the precision in the manufacturing of orthodontic brackets, strengthen their quality controls and ensure compliance with current quality standards, such as ISO 27020:2019. | spa |
