Resumen:
In the last decades, educational changes are focused on students as the center of the learning process. At the Degree in Biotechnology at Universidad Europea we have developed an innovative Academic Model based on Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach. The main purpose of this method is to facilitate students to work on active methodologies and to engage them into solving real professional problems. In this context, they acquire a deeper knowledge by developing their critical capacity and creativity. We have tackled the challenge of integrating activities implementing PBL methodologies in different courses during three academic years (2nd, 3rd and 4th year), ranging from performing a classical biotechnological process like beer brewing to designing new biotechnological targets. Along the degree, the projects
increase in complexity, fostering students´ freedom and self-thinking.
During the second year, the students learn the process of alcoholic fermentation through the classical brewing process, creating a craft brewery company. With this aim, they perform activities in three different courses (Microbiology, Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering and Strategic Management) to design, elaborate a...
