Abstract
The patent–enterprise nexus played a decisive role in the introduction of reinforced concrete in Spain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This study is based on the hypothesis that patents constituted a key instrument for the creation and consolidation of new companies linked to reinforced concrete in a context characterised by the absence of technical standardisation, and that patents also functioned as vehicles for technology transfer and for the dissemination of construction expertise. The research methodology is based on the systematic analysis of the technical and administrative records of patents related to reinforced concrete registered in Spain during the period under study. The results make it possible to identify eight pioneering companies associated with these patents, including construction firms, workshops dedicated to the manufacture of objects, and a company specialising in the production of reinforcement systems for reinforced concrete.
