La Casa Farnsworth en Eurípides

Abstract

Este texto pretende arrojar luz sobre la arquitectura miesiana a través del estudio del habitante ideal que podría haber tenido la Villa Farnsworth. Con este objetivo se estudia el drama griego y, concretamente, en la figura del Hipólito de Eurípides donde podremos encontrar los atributos de pureza y transparencia necesarios para el buen morar de esta vivienda. Por último se compara la vida efectiva que la Dra. Farnsworth tuvo en esta casa con el personaje de Fedra, antagonista de la tragedia, para concluir que el fracaso de esta habitación estuvo vinculado a la imposibilidad de asumir, por parte de la doctora, un “orden universal” al que la vivienda le impelía.

This text aims to shed some light on Mies Van der Rohe’s architecture, through the study of the ideal inhabitant who could have lived in the Farnsworth House. With this purpose we’ve studied the Greek drama and, specifically, in the figure of Hippolytus of Eurípides where you can find the attributes of purity and transparency necessary for the appropriate dwelling of this house. Finally we compare the effective life that Dr. Farnsworth had in this house with the character of Phaedra, antagonist of the tragedy, to conclude that the failure of this dwelling is linked to the impossibility to assume, by the doctor, the “universal order” to which the house obliged him.
