Abstract

This chapter examines the hidden fiscal costs and market distortions affecting Spain’s energy sector. It analyses electricity taxation, state subsidies, barriers to market entry, market concentration, renewable energy regulation and power purchase agreements. The chapter argues that taxation and regulatory intervention have contributed to higher electricity prices and weaker competition. It proposes simplifying energy taxation, reducing unnecessary subsidies, removing barriers to entry and strengthening market-based mechanisms in order to improve competition, transparency, efficiency and consumer welfare in Spain’s energy market.
