Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Dental trauma represents one of the main dental emergencies, with a significant prevalence in both pediatric and adult populations. Primary healthcare plays a fundamental role in the initial management of dental trauma, as general practitioners and nurses are often the first professionals to assess patients who have suffered such injuries. The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of knowledge and aptitude of Primary Care healthcare professionals, from both the public and private sectors, in the Valencian Community regarding the immediate management of dental trauma in pediatric patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was used, distributed via a link sent by email and through a QR code, with the collaboration of professional associations and healthcare centers, both public and private, in the Valencian Community. The instrument collected information on the level of knowledge, aptitude, training received, and awareness of clinical protocols for managing dental trauma. For statistical analysis, non-parametric tests such as Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U were applied, as well as the Chi-square test (χ²) to assess associations between qualitative variables. RESULTS: Of the 410 healthcare professionals surveyed, 404 were ultimately included in the analysis. A total of 63.9% demonstrated a low level of knowledge regarding the management of dental trauma. The pediatric nursing group showed significantly higher knowledge compared to the other groups (p = 0.004). Only 9.9% felt capable of acting appropriately in such emergency situations, and 88.8% had not received any specific training in dental first aid. Furthermore, only 6.4% reported being aware of any clinical protocol for managing dental trauma. CONCLUSION: The level of knowledge among Primary Care healthcare professionals, from both the public and private sectors in the Valencian Community, regarding the immediate management of dental trauma in pediatric patients, was generally low. Ongoing academic training in dental traumatology is insufficient, and standardized clinical protocols are not implemented in primary care centers. Continuous training and the standardization of management procedures are urgently needed to improve the care provided by these professionals in cases of dental trauma.
