Abstract
John Cage ideó en 1983 una composición
musical abierta llamada Ryoanji, como el
conocido jardín zen en ese templo centenario
de Kyoto. La experiencia de aquellas partituras
había comenzado antes con una amplia
serie de dibujos en cuya generación había
utilizado como pauta una quincena de piedras
diferentes, tantas como en el jardín, alrededor
de las cuales iba trazando recorridos circulares
azarosos con diecisiete lápices de grafitos de
distintas durezas. Existe en el procedimiento
de ejecución de los dibujos, y en las partituras
en la medida en que participan en parte de las
mismas reglas y disfrutan de la transversalidad
añadida de su valor musical además de gráfico,
un hermoso sentido de remembranza del
proceso mismo de construcción de aquel
jardín. Quince piedras sobre el papel son un
jardín de rocas sobre arena. Un jardín de rocas
sobre arena es el trasunto de una naturaleza en
algún otro lugar. Se trata del mismo recorrido
de ida y vuelta que el proyecto de arquitectura
transita a cada paso.

The experience of those scores had begun before with a large number of drawings in whose generation had used as a guideline fifteen different stones, as many as in the garden, around which was drawing random circular paths with seventeen pencils graphites of different hardnesses. There is in the process of execution of the drawings, and of the scores insofar involved in part of the same rules and enjoying the added transversality of its musical value besides graphic, a beautiful sense of remembrance of the construction process of that garden. Fifteen stones on paper are a rock garden on sand. A rock garden on sand is the transcript of nature elsewhere. This is the same route round the architectural project passes at every step.
