La conquista de la cuarta pared: evolución del frente de escena en el teatro renacentista

Abstract

Una de las conquistas del modelo de teatro ‘recreado’ en el siglo XVI, fue plantear la eliminación del ‘scaenae frons’ tal como se había conocido en la Antigüedad clásica. Dicha fase de desmaterialización arranca a finales del Renacimiento, gracias a las ‘nuevas’ teorías de representación espacial, coincidiendo en el tiempo con la recuperación del teatro clásico permanente y la reinterpretación vitruviana de la escena como un muro con vanos en forma de arcada o de arco de triunfo. Ejemplo paradigmático de todo lo anterior es el Teatro Olímpico palladiano, germen del proceso que llevará, con el transcurrir del siglo XIX, hasta la desaparición definitiva del frente de escena y la formalización de lo que denominamos ‘la cuarta pared’.*

One of the conquest of the recreation of the theater’s model in the XVI Century, was the proposition to eliminate the ‘scaenae frons’ as it was known in the classical Antiquity. The time for dematerialization begins at the end of Renaissance, under the influence of the spatial representation’s theories, at the same time that happens the recover of the permanent classical theater and the vitruvius reinterpretention of the scene as a wall with doorways as an archade or a triunfal arc. The Olimpic Theater is a paradigmatic example of this, the initial phase of a process which, within the run of the 19th Century, leads to the final disappearance of the stage front and the formalization of what we know as ‘the fourth wall’.
