Abstract
An atavistic sense of emotion or melancholy in the collective subconscious appears when someone sees an abandoned house. A feeling that expresses itself through fictions in which there are wandering beings. They are visible but not tangible. This paper proposes to understand architecture like a literary genre. Alternatives for the feeling of mutual belonging between the house and the inhabitant are explored from that position. Architecture is a cultural construct, playing a leading role in the collective psyche. The following paper is a small essay on the duplication as a base for ghostly activities. Giorgio Agamben’s findings will be the starting point. Several study cases in New York City will also be analysed: some places interfere disturbingly in the life of their occupants.
