This article describes the process of urban intrusion by the city of Madrid and its surrounding communities into those spaces designated by the General Metropolitan Area Plan of 1963 as a forested zone, or greenbelt. To do this, the concept of the greenbelt has been contextualized both historically and disciplinarily. The totality of actions carried out within such forested greenbelt areas are then mapped on a metropolitan scale, and analysed according to the parameters of location, occupation, use and planning type. After this, they are organized according to three key features, as formulated by the General Plan which was instituted in 1963, continued in 1985 and ended in 1997, and then summarised. Finally, two representative areas, the community of Pozuelo de Alarcón and the Hortaleza-Barajas district, are examined in greater depth.
